No Progress Made in Philly Transit Strike

(PHILADELPHIA) — A spokesman for a striking Philadelphia transit union says no progress has been made in negotiations, and subways, buses and trolleys remain idled for a fourth day.

Gov. Ed Rendell said early Friday that Transport Workers Union Local 234 was reviewing a new contract proposal and that he was hoping for an agreement by nighttime. Transit agency spokesman Richard Maloney also says the union is examining a proposed agreement, but declined to discuss specifics. (Scenes From a Paris Labor Strike.)

But union spokesman Jamie Horwitz won't say whether the union was reviewing a new proposal. He says no progress has been made.

The governor has been brokering negotiations.

The union represents about 5,000 Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority bus drivers, subway and trolley operators and mechanics.
